1-color letterpress printed on Crane Lettra 110# paper

Printed by hand on the Vandercook #4 in my Downtown Oakland office. As this is a handmade item, there is some variation in ink density.

Framing Instructions

Nothing beats custom framing, but if you're looking for an economical option for standard-sized frames I highly recommend Opposite Wall’s natural oak frames. To best protect your print from sun damage, I recommend replacing the plexi with UV plexi or glass.

I’m also a fan of Well Made Co. oak magnetic hangers. I tested a lot of magnetic hanging options and they were by far the best quality. Magnetic hangers are great for large or odd-sized prints.

Creative Process

Sketch
Every piece of art begins as a sketch, exploring different layouts and styles. I sketch in either pencil or on an iPad in Procreate.
Final Art
The final vector artwork is drafted point by point in Adobe Illustrator. I love getting lost in the details and spending hours perfecting curves.
Letterpress!
Color separations are made, plates are created, and the final artwork is hand printed one color at a time on my Vandercook press.

What is Letterpress?

Letterpress printing is a centuries-old form of relief printing in which a raised surface is inked and pressed into paper. Letterpress printers create prints with woodblocks, wood type, metal type, or metal / photo-polymer plates.

Letterpress prints are printed one color at a time. Artists create color separations and make unique plates for each layer of color. You can create single color prints or colors can be overlapped to create additional colors and beautiful overlay effects.

Modern letterpress enthusiasts love the tactile impression that plates make into paper. In my shop, I have a 1200lb 1940s Vandercook 4 cylinder press. When printing, a sheet of paper is attached to the cylinder and then manually rolled over the inked polymer plate.

The end result is a beautiful fine art print with a luscious tactile feel, gorgeous ink textures, and rich colors. I produce letterpress prints in limited editions for collectors and open editions for letterpress enthusiasts on a more limited budget.

All of my letterpress prints are created on a 1940s Vandercook #4 cylinder proof press located in my Oakland workshop. I purchased it from my pal Brit, who purchased it from my other bud Jordan. It has quite a powerlady lineage!
